Hospitality and the Kosher Law
by phillika - Thursday, June 22 2006, 08:52 PM

I have a BIG problem--and I am willing to bet this might actually be a
first for you as well...

I am not Jewish, but I have a dear friend who made aliyah several years
ago and is coming to visit me in September. I realize that this is a
stange request, but are there any services that can Kosher my kitchen,
located in Salt Lake City, Utah? I want my friend to feel comfortable
using my entire kitchen vs. only my microwave [which incidently is the
only appliance that I know how to Kosher] I was just going to buy all
plastic wear and kosher travel meals -- as well as separating all the
foods on separate shelves of the fridge--but it occured to me that this
isn't real hospitality. Real hospitality is providing a warm and
welcoming atmosphere for your guest, and if that means that I need a
Kosher kitchen then by all means that is what I want to do. So, ay

Thanks & B'Shalom!

I salute your dedication to your friend's principles and your willingness to do whatever it takes to make her comfortable.

I think that actually the best way to make her feel comfortable and provide hospitality is with your original plan -  the kosher travel meals and the plasticware. There are other rules besides koshering of a kitchen that are involved in preparing a home(which we discuss in our 'Kosher Basics' PDF and Powerpoint ). If something is overlooked, your friend may not want to hurt you by pointing it out. It is also possible that although she keeps kosher at home, she may not know all the rules of keeping kosher in a non-kosher home.

That's my thought on this, if you want to discuss more fully, I invite you to call me at the Star-K.
