Limited Counter space

Do you need seperate counter space for food prep.  Like one for meat, one dairy, and one parave.  We're BalTushuvah and I can only go by what I remember my mother doing.  It seemed she had different places for each catagory of food.  Am I wrong.?  I have an old farm kitchen with only one counter.  Is there any way to divide the counter?  I thought of placing seperators on the counter like they use in the supermarket to seperate your groceries.

Having separate counter space is not actually required in your home. When you prepare dairy, you won't place the food directly on the countertop. If you have a hot pot, it is best to put it down on a trivet. And the same for meat. Of course, having a separate space for each would be very helpful.

I have solved this problem by buying 2 very large glass "cutting boards" -- usually in the baking aisle of the department stores near me. Maybe they are not sold as cutting boards -- counter top protector? About 18" x 24" I think. Since we did not replace our countertops (no money), I put down the fleish one when I am preparing meat, dairy when I am preparing dairy.
